Tired of Feeling Sick and Tired?
Are you sick and nobody knows why? Are you struggling with a myriad of symptoms that no doctor can figure out. Are you tired of living in a brain fog, feeling depressed and exhausted all the time? You may be aware that inflammation is a primary source of you symptoms, however, what you may not know is that mold from your environment may be the source of all the inflammation.
Understanding Mold and Mycotoxins
Illness from mold is one of biggest health issues impacting Americans today that is not addressed effectively (mostly not at all) in the American medical system.
Mold illness is usually triggered in people who are genetically susceptible after living in home or working in a building that has high levels of mold or, less commonly, from food sources that contain mold.
While mold can serve as a trigger, what ultimately results in health issues for patients are the toxins released by mold. It’s estimated that 25% of people cannot identify these toxins, or mycotoxins, in the body and their immune system therefore, does not clear them out. As a result, these toxins remain in the body indefinitely causing a severe chronic inflammatory response wreaking havoc on your body and brain.
Genes can be a factor in susceptibility to mold toxicity leading to serious health challenges. Those who carry a specific gene called the HLA-DR gene, can have difficulty recovering from mold and other toxin exposures.
It’s estimated that 25% of Americans have the genetic predisposition to be affected by mold. This explains why mold can affect some people and not others. It also explains why it’s so often overlooked as a source of someone’s health conditions. Further, it’s estimated that nearly 50% of all homes and building in the US have been affected by water damage. This results in nearly 40 million Americans who are being misdiagnosed and treated for symptoms being caused by a mold related illness.
What is Mold Illness/CIRS?
Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is a multi-symptom, multi-system illness caused by exposure to biotoxins, or neurotoxins produced from a biological source. In essence, it’s an inflammatory condition caused by exposure to a biological toxin such as mold resulting in a variety of symptoms, affecting several different systems within the body. Symptoms may include, but are not limited to:
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF MOLD/MYCOTOXIN ILLNESS:
- Body aches and sharp shooting pains like electrical shocks and or “ice pick” like pain
- numbness/tingling and joint pain
- Lack of stamina and fatigue
- Light, noise and sound sensitivity
- Blurry vision
- Muscle cramps
- Sinus issues and coughing
- Static shocks
- Abdominal pain and diarrhea
- Memory changes
- Vertigo and balance issues
- Poor focus and other neurological symptoms
- Depression, anxiety and or mood swings
- Skin reactions
- Night sweats and or alternating between feeling hot and cold
AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS RELATED TO MOLD & MYCOTOXINS:
- Autoimmune Diseases
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Hashimoto’s Disease
- Graves Disease
- Celiac Disease
- Sjogren’s Syndrome
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Heart Disease
- ADD/ADHD and more
How do I know if I have CIRS?
One of the greatest challenges facing people struggling with CIRS is that it’s only recently beginning to catch the attention of healthcare providers. In fact, many people struggling with CIRS suffer with a variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms. Because practitioners are uneducated on mold related illness and the biomarkers associated with CIRS are not commonly measured, patients often leave feeling frustrated with yet another “normal” diagnosis and a prescription of antidepressants. At Lifegate, Dr. Yakel works in conjunction with integrated MD’s from George Washington Integrated Medicine Institute to help uncover the root cause of your symptoms.
TESTING FOR MOLD OR MYCOTOXINS:
At Lifegate Health Center, in addition to utilizing an expansive history and in depth symptom survey to determine if a possible mold exposure occurred, Dr. Yakel uses a variety of tests to help determine if a your are being affected by mold and struggling with a chronic inflammatory condition. This includes both blood and urine to determine genetic susceptibility, the presence of mycotoxins, and the severity of the inflammatory response. Testing may include:
- Mycotoxin urinalysis
- Genetic testing for Human Leukocyte Antigens
- Serum antibody screens for Aspergillus, Penicillium, Stachybotrys chartarum.
- Complement proteins
- Melanocyte stimulating Hormone (MSH)
- Visual Contrast Sensitivity
- TGF beta-1
Support for Mold Related Illness:
There are a variety of therapies available for Mold and mycotoxin illness, including herbs, supplements, pharmaceutical drugs, and saunas. At Lifegate Health Center, we often have to use a combined approach of all therapies listed below.
- Full spectrum saunas
- Lymphatic drainage support
- Activated charcoal, bentonite clay, and other natural binders
- Liposomal Glutithione
- Nebulizing therapies
- Baths with epsom and or dead sea salt with essential oils
- Natural Anti-fungals
- Customized dietary protocols
- Binding drugs such as Cholestyramine can be very helpful for some patients with mold illness (using Dr. Shoemacker’s treatment approach).
